YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Triple-digit temperatures in southern Michigan prompted school officials in Detroit and Flint to cancel activities Tuesday.
Ypsilanti's high reached 100 degrees at 1 p.m., and the National Weather Service said the high should reach 105 degree in Detroit and 104 in Ann Arbor and Midland.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport reported a 98-degree reading at 1 p.m., while it was 97 at Ann Arbor, Charlotte, Flint and Monroe.
Relief should follow soon, with a front arriving the next day bringing highs down to the 80s in the southern Lower Peninsula, the weather service said.
Some Detroit schools are calling off classes.
It's just the latest in a string of scorching summer days in the state. Lower Michigan had a stretch of 100-degree weather earlier in July.
The hot, dry summer also has hurt Michigan's field crops. U.S. Agriculture Department Undersecretary Michael Scuse was in the state Tuesday to tour the damage.
