First Person: Snowstorm Snarls Yaphank, N.Y.

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | I'm in Yaphank City, N.Y., where the snowstorm has caused lots of inconveniences. Today in the morning, it was raining and windy. I thought this was just it. I went to work as usual and I was told to go back home because they anticipated bad weather. By the time I reached home it had started snowing. Snow covered my vehicle in less than two hours. At approximately 5:30 p.m., I drove to check on my friend Michael, a Vietnam War veteran. As I'm writing, he is busy shoveling snow in front of his door.

Michael told me he wanted to go do errands but he can't. He lives six miles away from the Stop & Shop grocery store. He says his car is not a 4-wheel-drive, and he cannot risk driving. I decided to use my car, go buy him some snacks from a convenient store. Michael is glad that I checked on him. Michael says that he has been living in Yaphank for the last 20 years but he has never seen such snowstorm.
